What matters most before choosing in this category
Weighted on who controls the bridge escrow (35), how concentrated the validator set really is (25), the documented failure and halt record (25), and how the chain behaves at finality (15). Bridge custody leads because a sidechain has no Ethereum fallback: there is no fraud proof and no forced exit, so whoever can move the escrow contract can move your assets, and the only question left is how much warning you would get. On the largest escrow in this comparison the answer is none — the Polygon PoS bridge sits behind a timelock whose getMinDelay() returns 0.

Who can replace the contract holding your assets on Ethereum, and how many seconds of warning would you get?
How concentrated is block production measured by who gets paid, rather than by how many validator keys are registered?

EVM chain running Ethereum's consensus clients with its own validator set, connected to Ethereum by the Arbitrary Message Bridge and Omnibridge.
EVM chain running Ethereum's consensus clients with its own validator set, connected to Ethereum by the Arbitrary Message Bridge and Omnibridge. Strongest on bridge custody control (6/10): The documented threshold is "Bridge transactions currently requires signatures from 4 of 7 validators." and this page names the seven organisations: GnosisDao, Protofire, CowProtocol, Giveth, GnosisSafe, Kleros and Hopr. Reading Ethereum on 2026-08-07 confirms it exactly: the foreign AMB… Weakest on validator set concentration (4/10): Sampling the 600 most recent blocks from gnosis-rpc.publicnode.com on 2026-08-07 (from head 47,608,464) returned only 57 distinct block fee-recipient addresses, with the top five taking 79.8% of blocks and a single address, 0x30db0d10d3774e78f8cb214b9e8b72d4b402488a, proposing 328 of the 600 sampled blocks (54.7%).… Published price: "xDai tokens are native tokens on Gnosis and also used to pay for execution of smart contracts and gas fees." (fetched 2026-08-07).
Best forBridge custody control — 6/10
Main tradeoffTwo of the seven bridge signers named in the docs, GnosisDao and GnosisSafe, sit under the same organisational umbrella, so the effective independence of a 4-of-7 threshold is lower than the arithmetic suggests. Separately, the December 2025 fork established that this validator set will rewrite state when governance asks it to.
Verify before signup"xDai tokens are native tokens on Gnosis and also used to pay for execution of smart contracts and gas fees." (fetched 2026-08-07). Normalised on the same basis as the rest of this file: eth_gasPrice on gnosis-rpc.publicnode.com returned 0.000024915 gwei on 2026-08-07, so a 21,000-gas transfer costs 21,000 x 0.000024915 gwei = 0.000000000523 xDAI — the cheapest chain measured here.

Frequently asked
Questions people ask before choosing sidechains
What actually secures a sidechain bridge?
An upgrade key, in every case here — the question is only how many hands hold it and how long they have to wait. The Polygon PoS bridge, the largest escrow in this comparison, is owned by a TimelockController whose getMinDelay() returns 0; because it is the non-enumerable variant, getRoleMemberCount() reverts, so the proposer set could not be listed, and four independent public RPCs refused the archive-range eth_getLogs that would have recovered it from RoleGranted events. SKALE shows the same gap from the other direction: its bridge is described in terms of an 11-of-16 BLS threshold, but all three mainnet escrow proxies share one ProxyAdmin owned by a Safe with getThreshold() = 3 over five owners — three keys can replace the escrow logic without delay, whatever sixteen nodes signed. Chiliz publishes the vault and hides the lock: its Ethereum handler holds 1,915,281,358 CHZ and reports seven relayers, while every getter for the signing threshold reverts.
Is a large validator set the same as a decentralised one?
No, and Gnosis Chain is the instructive case because it is usually named as the most decentralised set in this group — by validator key count it may well be. Measured by who actually gets paid, one fee-recipient address took 328 of the 600 most recent blocks (54.7%) and five addresses took 79.8%, sampled 2026-08-07. Key counts are a registry fact; block rewards are a behavioural one, and this comparison scores the second.
Can I trust the standard finalized tag on these chains?
Not without testing it. Chiliz Chain returns block 0 for the finalized tag while its head sits at 36,455,222, confirmed against two independent endpoints on 2026-08-07. That is worse than an outright error of the kind SKALE and Harmony return, because an exchange or bridge wiring up the standard tag receives a well-formed block that is 36.4 million blocks stale and gets no exception to catch. The two chains with the best measured finality — Cronos at zero lag and BNB Smart Chain at one second — are also two of the three with the weakest answer on bridge custody, and neither publishes an enumerable Ethereum-side signer set. Fast settlement on a chain you reached through an unspecified bridge is fast settlement of an unknown claim.
What does a documented halt tell me that an audit does not?
What the real security model is when it is tested. BNB Chain's own account of stopping the October 2022 Token Hub exploit is that it worked "by contacting community validators one by one" — a set small enough to phone is a set small enough to coerce. That sentence is worth more than any architecture diagram, which is why the documented failure and halt record carries the same weight here as validator concentration.
