Questions people ask before choosing seed backup
Does a higher temperature rating mean a better backup?
No, and in this pool the correlation runs the other way. A stated rating is usually the melting point of the alloy — a property of stainless steel that any product made from it can claim — not a result of testing that product. One backup advertised a fireproof threshold of 1399 to 1455°C, which is very nearly the published melting range of grade 304 steel, and lost the seed roughly 300°C below it. Another prints the melting point and the fire rating as the same number, two paragraphs apart on the same page. Meanwhile the two most credible products in the pool publish no temperature at all. Treat the number as marketing and the independent grade as evidence.
Why weight independent testing so heavily?
Because it is the only claim in this category anyone can check, and because the failure mode is undetectable until it matters. You will not learn that your backup was inadequate until after a fire, by which point the phrase is gone. Jameson Lopp has published fire, crush and acid results across dozens of these devices, and one vendor in this pool links to those results directly from its own product page — which is a meaningful signal in itself, since the products with the most to hide point you at their own marketing instead.
Is surviving the fire the same as still being usable?
Not at all, and they are scored separately here for that reason. A plate can come out of a furnace structurally intact with the stamped letters deformed or the tiles fused, which is a device that survived and a backup that did not. The tester's own framing is useful: a capsule seizing shut is not a critical failure, because the phrase is still recoverable by someone willing to cut it open, whereas illegible characters are terminal. Ask what state the phrase is in afterwards, not whether the object still exists.
