Decision guide
What matters most before choosing in this category
The best Layer-2 depends on what you weight: EVM-equivalent chains run existing contracts unchanged, longer-lived chains are more battle-tested, and Ethereum-DA chains inherit L1 data security while external-DA chains trade some of that for lower cost. A ZK rollup gives faster trust-minimised L1 finality and an Optimistic rollup uses a challenge window — a tradeoff we surface but do not rank. Pick on your priority — EVM portability, track record, or data availability — not on a headline gas number.
Key question
Do you need faster L1 finality (ZK) or the deepest existing liquidity (Optimistic)?
Key question
Must existing EVM contracts run unchanged, or is EVM-compatible enough?
Key question
Do you require Ethereum-level data availability, or is an external DA layer acceptable for lower cost?

Main tradeoff
The RU packages EXPIRE — Free 50M RU in 32 days, Elementary 500M in 60 days, Premium 4,000M in 90 days. Unused units are forfeited, so the category's cheapest per-request price only holds if you burn the entire package inside the window; a quiet quarter means you paid $299 for whatever you happened to use. On top of that, Archive Mode adds 30% RU, eth_getLogs RU doubles 'for every additional 200 KB' above 200 KB of response data, any method doubles per extra 1 MB, and Polygon MEV-protected eth_sendRawTransaction is billed at 25,000 RU per transaction — 1,250x a normal eth_call.

Free: $0, 50M RU, 32 days validity. Elementary: $49, 500M RU, 60 days. Premium: $299, 4,000M RU, 90 days. Pay As You Go: $0.01 per unit, 50,000 RU. Enterprise: contact. Rate limits — Public RPC '10 requests/sec' and '200 RU/sec'; Free '20 requests/sec' / '400 RU/sec'; Elementary '1000 requests/sec' / '40000 RU/sec'; Premium '2500 requests/sec' / '100000 RU/sec'. Per-method RU on Ethereum: eth_call 20 RU, eth_getLogs 50 RU, eth_getBalance 15 RU, eth_blockNumber 10 RU, trace_transaction 20 RU, debug_traceTransaction 150 RU. Archive Mode causes '30% additional RU consumption'.
