Decision guide
What matters most before choosing in this category
The best custodian depends on which entity would sign your agreement and what licence that entity holds. Group brands do not hold assets — a national trust bank with fiduciary powers, a state trust company and an unregulated software platform are three different answers to 'who holds this', and only the structure documented before a failure decides what you recover. Insurance is read as written rather than as advertised: every published limit here is aggregate across the custodian's whole client book, not per client.
Key question
Which legal entity would appear on your custody agreement, and what licence does it hold?
Key question
If the custodian failed tomorrow, what documented mechanism keeps your assets out of its estate?
Key question
Does your mandate require a bankruptcy-remote structure, or is segregation enough?

National trust bank plus New York and MENA trust entities; multisig cold storage
Data checked Aug 2026
National trust bank plus New York and MENA trust entities; multisig cold storage. Strongest on who legally holds the assets (9/10): Holds a real federal national trust bank charter (OCC #25366) plus two additional trust entities covering New York and MENA, so client assets can sit with a chartered trustee in three regimes. The prospectus states 'we hold digital assets in trust, separating them from our operational funds' and describes fiduciary… Weakest on pricing you can actually see (2/10): bitgo.com/pricing returns HTTP 404 — there is no pricing page. Even the IPO prospectus, which discloses $104bn of assets under custody and 1,550+ supported assets, gives no fee rate: it says only that BitGo charges 'recurring account and custody fees, as well as transaction fees'. A buyer cannot form any cost estimate… Published price: Not published — bitgo.com/pricing returns HTTP 404. The 424B4 prospectus filed 23 January 2026 discloses only the fee types, identically for both product lines: 'We charge recurring account and custody fees, as well as transaction fees for certain movements…

Main tradeoff
BitGo publicly markets 'Full, Unconditional OCC Approval' while its own SEC prospectus says 'conditional approval' six times and the OCC's letter of 12 December 2025 reads 'The OCC hereby grants conditional approval of the Application' — treat vendor claims here as requiring independent verification. Separately, the $250m policy applies only where a BitGo trust company holds every key in cold storage, so the multisig self-custody product BitGo built its reputation on is entirely uninsured.
