Tradeoff signal
Tradeoff: Three compounding surprises, all landing after the card is charged. (1) YOUR REPORTS ARE RENTED — THOUGH YOUR DATA IS NOT DELETED. Terms clause 5.2: "For recurring services, we grant you and your Authorised Users a right to access the relevant Services only for the duration that you continue to pay for the Service, subject to these Terms." The cancellation article is blunter: "Once your subscription expires, you will lose access to any paid features, including tax reports." Read the whole article, though, because the same page also says: "The data and integrations you have imported are retained and can still be reviewed on the Accounts and Transactions pages unless a refund is issued, which may result in their deletion." So the history stays visible; what dies is the ability to REGENERATE the filed report and to EXPORT anything. The documented escape hatch does not survive either: "Currently, the only way to back up your data in Summ (formerly Crypto Tax Calculator) is by exporting your Transaction report. This ensures you have a copy of your raw data outside the platform.", which requires an active subscription ("An active subscription is required to download reports for all years.") and whose nine columns carry no cost basis. Stop paying in year three and the 2025 return you already filed cannot be regenerated to defend an audit — even though you can still look at the transactions behind it. (2) AT $49 AND $99 YOU CANNOT CHANGE THE INVENTORY METHOD. The pricing page, fetched 29 September 2026, no longer names inventory methods by tier (the features that start at Investor ($249) are "Tax minimisation algorithm", "Tax loss harvesting", "Advanced reports" and "Audit report"), but the vendor's own pricing help article states the gate: "Additionally, tools like the Tax Loss Harvesting Tool, advanced inventory methods, and advanced reports are only available on Investor and Trader Plans." The US default is Highest In First Out, so a US filer on Rookie or Hobbyist is locked into HIFO — a method that materially changes the tax owed — and the fix costs $200 more rather than a settings click. (3) UK FILERS WITH DEFI FACE A ONE-WAY DOOR: "Please note that, currently, the Bridge and Swap categories are not supported if you choose HM Revenue and Customs as your inventory method. If you use other inventory methods (e.g., First In First Out or Average Cost), you can use these categories but will not be able to switch back to HM Revenue and Customs." The method that actually binds under UK law is unavailable to anyone who has bridged or swapped, and leaving it is irreversible. Worse, the escape is paywalled: "In Summ (formerly Crypto Tax Calculator), we provide three inventory methods if your country setting is the UK. The HM Revenue and Customs method is available for all paid subscriptions. We also provide the First In First Out and Average Cost inventory methods for users on the Investor and Trader plans." — so a UK filer on Rookie ($49) or Hobbyist ($99) has HMRC as their only method and therefore cannot use the Bridge or Swap categories at all. Lesser but real: the pricing page, fetched 29 September 2026, no longer lists smart contract transactions by tier, but the vendor's help centre puts them above the $49 tier: "Certain features, such as smart contract transactions, require a subscription to the Hobbyist Plan or higher."
