When did MiCA take effect and what happens next?

MiCA (Regulation (EU) 2023/1114) was published in the Official Journal of the European Union on 9 June 2023 and entered into force on 29 June 2023. Stablecoin rules (Titles III + IV) became applicable on 30 June 2024; the full regulation applied from 30 December 2024. National transitional windows close throughout 2025-2026, with Germany's BaFin operating the longest transition through 30 June 2026. The European Commission's first review of MiCA is due by 30 December 2026.

Directive (EU) 2023/2226 (DAC8) extends EU administrative cooperation in tax matters to crypto-assets. EU CASPs must report client transactions to national tax authorities, which exchange information across the bloc. MiCA + DAC8 together close the information gap for crypto taxation.

Regulation (EU) 2023/1113 (the EU Travel Rule for crypto-asset transfers) is fully enforced alongside MiCA. CASPs must attach originator and beneficiary information to all crypto transfers of €1,000 or more.
